No-exam life insurance

Learn who qualifies for accelerated underwriting, how the process works, and what to expect if you don't qualify.

Many carriers have introduced accelerated underwriting: within certain age and coverage limits, they make decisions based on your application, pharmacy records, driving history, and available data rather than ordering an exam. Some carriers issue decisions within hours. Each quote on this site specifies whether an exam is required, might be required, or is not required.

What it changes

Accelerated underwriting is not the same as no underwriting. Your responses are checked, and a policy issued based on inaccurate information may be contested for two years after issue. If the carrier's records suggest questions, they may request an exam or lab tests anyway. You decide whether to proceed when that happens.

Who tends to qualify

Generally, applicants under about 60 years old applying for amounts within the carrier's accelerated underwriting limits qualify if they have no significant health conditions and have not used tobacco in the past year or longer. Some carriers will accept recent lab results from a medical visit in place of a new exam.

If an exam is needed, expect a 20- to 30-minute visit from a paramedical technician at your home or workplace in the Hayward area, at no charge. For healthy applicants, exam results frequently lead to a better rate class, so the exam can work in your favor.
